Apple has officially announced that Tim Cook will step down as chief executive after 15 years, marking the end of a defining era for the tech giant.
According to Apple, Cook will transition into the role of executive chairman, while John Ternus will take over as CEO on 1 September. Cook will remain in his current position through the summer to support the leadership handover.
The company said Cook will continue contributing to key areas, including engaging with global policymakers.
Who is John Ternus?
Ternus is no outsider. He has spent 25 years at Apple and currently leads hardware engineering.
During that time, he has worked on nearly every major Apple product. This includes multiple generations of the iPhone and iPad, as well as the launch of AirPods and the Apple Watch. He also played a key role in shifting Mac computers to Apple’s own silicon chips.
Cook described Ternus as a “visionary” leader with “the heart to lead with integrity”, adding that he is the right person to guide Apple forward.
Tim Cook’s Legacy at Apple
Cook took over as CEO in 2011 after Steve Jobs stepped down due to health issues. Since then, he has overseen massive growth.
Apple became the first public company to reach a $1 trillion valuation in 2018. It is now valued at around $4 trillion.
Analysts credit Cook with strengthening Apple’s global reach and operational efficiency. However, some critics argue the company has struggled to deliver breakthrough products on the level of the iPhone.
A Shift Back to Innovation?
Industry experts say Ternus’ appointment could signal a shift in strategy.
With a strong background in hardware, he is expected to push Apple toward more innovative products. Analysts suggest this may include new devices like foldable phones or advanced wearables.
There is also pressure on Apple to move faster in artificial intelligence. Competitors like Google and Microsoft have already invested heavily in the space, while Apple has taken a more cautious approach.
As one analyst noted, the company now needs to “escape the iPhone’s gravitational pull” and find its next major growth driver.
What Comes Next for Apple
Cook called his time as CEO “the greatest privilege” of his life, while Ternus said he is optimistic about Apple’s future.
The leadership change comes at a critical moment. Apple remains one of the world’s most valuable companies, but faces growing pressure to innovate again.
With a new CEO at the helm, the next chapter will test whether Apple can balance its polished, disciplined approach with the need for faster, bolder ideas.
