A disturbing case has emerged from Nkomazi in Mpumalanga, where a three-year-old girl was allegedly killed while accompanying her mother to work as a domestic worker.

According to provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, the child’s mother had left her daughter asleep on a couch while she carried out her duties at the residence. Later, when the child could not be found, she began searching and was directed by the suspect to the garage, where she discovered her daughter’s lifeless body. The child had sustained visible head injuries.

Emergency services and police were called to the scene, but paramedics confirmed that the child had already died upon their arrival.

Police say a 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is expected to appear in the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. He reportedly lives at the same property with his grandmother, who employs the victim’s mother.

During questioning, the suspect allegedly told authorities he had been angered because the domestic worker had not completed her cleaning duties properly. Investigators have since opened a murder case and are continuing with their inquiries.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the local community and has reignited concern over violence against children in South Africa. Community voices in Mpumalanga have previously called for stronger sentencing in cases involving harm to minors, particularly where domestic tensions escalate into fatal violence.

The incident adds to growing national concern over child safety in vulnerable work environments, where caregivers and their children may be exposed to unsafe or abusive conditions.
