Three suspects have now been charged with murder after an off-duty South African National Defence Force member was shot dead in Delft South, Cape Town. The breakthrough follows a targeted police operation after the 37-year-old soldier was gunned down in Kokaboom Street on the night of 8 April 2026.
Arrests Shift Case Forward
Police arrested five suspects in Delft South during the investigation. Three of them have since been charged with murder and were expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court. Police believe robbery was the motive behind the killing.
That marks a major shift in the case. When police first responded to the shooting at about 10:20pm, the attackers had already fled and no arrests had been made. Officers found the soldier with multiple gunshot wounds and he was declared dead at the scene by medical personnel.
Police Recover Key Items
Investigators from the Serious Violent Crime unit, backed by specialist teams including the Provincial Operational Command Centre and the drone unit, recovered the victim’s firearm, magazine, bank card and cellphone. Those recoveries could prove key as police build the case against the accused.
The victim was off duty at the time of the attack. Early police findings also said he was not linked to Operation Prosper, the anti-crime military deployment on the Cape Flats. That helped narrow the investigation to the circumstances around the fatal shooting itself rather than any active SANDF operation.
Robbery Angle Under Spotlight
The robbery motive now places the focus on what happened in the moments surrounding the attack. With the victim’s personal belongings and firearm recovered during the police operation, detectives appear to be piecing together a clearer picture of how the killing unfolded.
The case has drawn sharp attention because it happened amid ongoing violence on the Cape Flats despite the military presence in hotspot areas. For Delft residents, the arrests may bring some relief, but the court process will now be closely watched as the murder case moves ahead.
