Themba Zwane’s red card during Bafana Bafana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against Mexico was reportedly flagged by a sports betting monitoring group.

TimesLIVE reported that the incident was among seven “yellow notices” issued by the Group of Copenhagen during the tournament.

The independent international network monitors possible manipulation in sporting competitions.

A yellow notice does not prove that a player, official or team manipulated a match.

It signals a slightly increased alert based on possible irregularities requiring closer examination.

Betting group monitored tournament

The Council of Europe’s summary said the group monitored 104 World Cup matches.

Fifteen games were placed under increased surveillance, particularly during the final round of group-stage fixtures.

Seven yellow notices were issued, while 12 major controversies were examined for potential integrity risks.

Possible warning signs can include unexplained changes in betting odds, social media rumours or information received from sources.

According to the report, Zwane’s dismissal in the 84th minute against Mexico was among the incidents that prompted an in-game notice.

FIFA finds no suspicious activity

The Group of Copenhagen’s alert differed from FIFA’s official tournament findings.

FIFA’s integrity task force said it had identified no suspicious betting activity or indications of match manipulation linked to any World Cup fixture.

The monitoring operation was conducted in coordination with FIFA’s integrity task force, which includes independent bodies such as the Council of Europe and Group of Copenhagen.

The alert therefore does not amount to an accusation against Zwane or Bafana Bafana.

Red card sparked controversy

Zwane entered the match as a substitute in the 61st minute.

He was sent off 23 minutes later after a video assistant referee review.

Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio ruled that Zwane had caught Mexico’s Roberto Alvarado in the face while using his arm to fend off the opponent.

Many South Africans criticised the decision and argued that there appeared to be no intent.

Zwane later received a three-match suspension from FIFA’s disciplinary committee.

South Africa appealed the punishment but was unsuccessful.

Bafana lost the match 2-0 after also having Sphephelo Sithole sent off earlier in the second half.
